Chongqing is the largest and most populous city in all of China and one of the largest in the world. The City of Fog is also perched on fantastically rugged and vertical topography, making it both visually stunning and a pain in the ass to walk around.
The Wushan district of Chongqing is perched high above the mighty Yangtze River, and it’s a beautiful view but very steep and laborious. To get from bottom to top of the main business street means at least a one-hour hike. Can you imagine, in a city that’s famous not only for questionable air quality but also unbearable heat and humidity? Ugh.
Well, the wise and benevolent city planners have just unveiled the latest and greatest, highest and longest escalator system in the world. Stretching almost a kilometer in total length and rising 240 meters vertically, it’s yet another remarkable engineering feat from a country that just keeps knocking them out of the park.
It’s actually a combined series of escalator segments, elevators and pedestrian walkways leading to a series of viewing platforms. Hop on and off whenever it suits you, enjoy the panoramic view, and take a break from the city heat.
